Alegria in Wonderland, Alegria Pride 2009

We slid down the Alegria Rabbit Hole shortly after three a.m.-and when we landed on our feet, we had to stop. We had to STOP-right where we were and take it all in: the cacophonous adrenal rush of sliding into Alegria in Wonderland at warp speed. So much to discover, as Alice might have said: the caterpillar perched atop the humongous mushroom, oversized tea cups and saucers (with Alegria tea bags-Drink me!), a double-spout tea pot-and a huge pink Cheshire cat whose grin illuminated the recesses of M2 like a crescent moon over Manhattan. We’d slipped through the looking glass and landed in Wonderland.

With support from Connecticut, Boston, The Cape and Rhode Island, the party lasted a full day and provided a full slate of entertainment for those who came. This year’s Dance on the Pier provided flawless music from three talented DJs, perfect weather and a hot crowd. Even slightly non-marquee live acts couldn’t dampen the thousands stamping their feet on top of the Hudson River.

The Dance on the Pier was born out of a time when LGBT persons could not dance openly and proudly together, so for this reason, this official NYC LGBT Dance had a special meaning during the 40th Anniversary of Stonewall in this year's Pride. With the theme of "Paint the Town Proud - Create, Act, Inspire" the RI Pride Committee held the 33rd Annual Pride Festival at Station Park in Providence. Thousands came out to visit the vendors, walk the dog, and enjoy the acts on the main stage. The day ended on a high note with Debra Gibson giving a full performance for the crowds as the sun set. Folsom Street East, New York’s s/m-leather-fetish themed street festival, took place this past Sunday over Leather Pride Weekend and drew nearly 10,000 visitors. This leather event included performances from feature Billboard Top Ten recording artist Sylvia Tosun, as well as Peppermint, Reina, Miss Guy, the Johns, The Imperial Court of New York, Noa Tylo, Trai La Trash and Fredrick Ford.
