Cafe Pride Welcomes LGBT Youth
Harassment, depression, substance abuse, homelessness and suicide. These are just a few of the myriad issues that often face LGBTQ youth, initiating a vicious cycle that leaves some feeling short on options and short on hope. In recognition of the unique needs of LGBT youth, a group of Lake View churches decided to do something to break the cycle: They created Cafe Pride. Originally focused on small group discussions and support, the program has evolved from its creation in the late ‘90s into a weekly safe social space for 16- to 24-year-old queer youth and their allies, held from 8 p.m. to midnight on Fridays. The program is hosted by the Lake View Presbyterian Church to provide a safe haven to youth, many of whom admittedly lack positive past experiences with religion.
Under Obama: "LGBT Change is Coming" -- Or Is It?
With just over a month to go until President-Elect Barack Obama’s inauguration, many leaders in the LGBT community wonder whether campaign pronouncements for change will see a life beyond rhetoric, particularly following the Obama’s selection Wednesday of an anti-gay evangelical, Rev. Rick Warren, to deliver his inauguration’s invocation.
Prop 8: Notes from the Protest
This past Saturday, something incredible happened in Chicago and around the globe, the true magnitude of which I doubt our community will fully comprehend for years to come. With demonstrators assembled in nearly every state across the U.S. and in several countries worldwide, the LGBT community made its opinion on California’s passage of the anti-gay marriage Proposition 8 echo throughout the land. The effort was miraculous, and not just for the fact that millions of people turned out to hit the streets. In just over a week, the creators of JoinTheImpact.com were able to galvanize our community by utilizing social networking web tools and building a massive grassroots action that the organizers of our movement’s Stonewall days could never have imagined.

Memories fade, apathy grows...who will tell our story?
In honor of Gay History month we need to tell the story of our birth as a community, and remember those upon whose shoulders we stand as we continue to fulfill our dreams and our destiny.

We’re Everywhere
Chicago is well known for its two vibrant LGBTQ neighborhoods, Boystown and Andersonville, but increasingly LGBTQ people are letting it be known that they live in, and are constructive players in, all parts of the city. And these days flying the rainbow flag doesn’t stop at the big bad city’s borders. Fairly quietly, LGBTQ organizations have sprouted in suburbs all around the city.
