Didn't Madonna say on the red carpet that she tended to piss Elton John off?

Perhaps it was the fact they were up against each other for Best Original Song at last night's Golden Globe Awards that brought new blood to their seven-year feud.

It began on the red carpet when John was asked about if he thought Madge might win.

"Madonna doesn't have a f****** chance," was his response.

When the reporter asked if "those were fighting words?" he replied: "No, those are accurate words."

When Madonna was told this, she responded: "Was he wearing a dress? Those are fighting words... OK, well, may the best man win."

On the podium after her name was announced, Madonna first made an emasculating jab at host Ricky Gervais, before accepting the award. While she was speaking, the camera panned in on a frowning John.

Backstage, Madonna added fuel to the fire: "I hope he speaks to me for the next couple of years. He tends to get mad at me. I don't feel bad."

Next John's husband David Furnish wrote on Twitter: "David Furnish hadn't then put on Facebook: "Madonna winning Best Original Song truly shows how these awards have nothing to do with merit.

"Her acceptance speech was embarrassing in its narcissism. And her criticism of [Lady] Gaga shows how desperate she is."

Their feud began 2004 when Elton accused Madge of miming after she won a Best Live Act award at the GQ Awards.

He declared: "Madonna, best f**king live act? F*** off! Since when has lip-synching been live?"
