It began when a Twitter user named Lorraine_Star retweeted a posting falsely attributed to CNN:

"RT @CNN: American recording artist Cher dies at 65 years old. Found dead in Malibu home."

Or it may have also started with Obese School Girl, who tweeted, "lighting a vanilla candle for cher. RIP CHER."

But in no time at all, it became a Twitter trend: RIP Cher.

The initial tweet fulled Kim Kardashian:

"Did I juist (sic) hear Cher has passed away? Is this real? OMG," Kardashian tweeted. "I hope this is a twitter joke and not true. I don't see it on the news anywhere. I'm praying its not true..."

An hour later, Kardashian learned the truth and re-tweeted: "Can't believe people would make up a sick joke like Cher died. These people need to get a life! Thanks twitter for clearing that up!"

Millionaire Matchmaker star Patti Stanger was also duped by the hoax, asking followers, "Is this for real? I don't see it anywhere."

For the record: Cher is not dead. She is just the victim of the latest celebrity death hoax. This was confirmed when the singer's close friend, the jewelery designer Loree Rodkin, tweeted, "It's a hoax. She's fine."
