Lady Bunny Gets Roasted :: Happy 50th!
Not since Glen Close served up her infamous rabbit stew has an audience had more of a craving for wild game, than for this Wednesday's special edition of "Hot Mess" at the XL Cabaret. All of nightlife comes out to roast the legendary Lady Bunny. It's been 50 years since the original wigged-wonder made her much prophesied debut, and it's been all kinds of split ends every since.
Bianca Del Rio the co-headliner of the Wednesday night mainstay in the midtown space promises that it will be quite the spectacle. "I'm never going to be as old as Bunny!" Bianca jokingly commented. "This is her 50th year on this earth...and I have still haven't asked her where she had lived for the first 30." Truly, all the jabs at Bunny are meant in good fun.
Joining her expected friends, including Sherry Vine, who's known Bunny since her youth, are several notable nightlife personalities who are also ready to get in on the act; among them The Village Voice's Michael Musto and comedic icon and fashion guru Joan Rivers. "It should be lots of fun," Del Rio added. "Bunny is one of the few queens who can dish it, as well as take it."
Lady Bunny had solidified her notoriety in nightlife and club culture as the originator of the now famously fabled Wigstock festival of drag. It took no effort on her part to fashionably freeze the 60's style into a retro-contemporary signature of her own. It's often been debated that she's the inspiration of the classic RuPaul track "Miss Lady DJ" which appeared on RuPaul's debut album "Supermodel of the World" especially since the beehived-bombshell has produced her own set of dance tunes and collaborated with 90's pop-starlet Lady Miss Kier of Deee-Lite fame.

Lady Bunny continues to spin from coast- to-coast and appears as a guest judge on "RuPaul's Drag Race" as well as imparts her wisdom as part of the "Drag U" faculty. Showing no signs of losing traction, she and Bianca Del Rio took on the duties of hosting "Hot Mess" at the XL Cabaret, introducing a bit of Vegas cabaret to New York City. "We're a little more fun than Vegas," Del Rio doesn't hesitate to add. "It's exciting to be in a place [like XL] that actually works, with lights and a crew -�XL's been really good to us." It brings out even the most jaded among New York's night crawlers.
In closing Bianca added: "I've known Bunny since I was 20, and it's really great to be working with her every week." And Milan, another alumni from the "Drag Race" circuit and a regular to the "Hot Mess" ensemble, is also looking forward to Bunny's big night. "We going to roast the hell out of her. She's going to cook -�people are going to think she's a black woman when we finish!" Stay out of the kitchen. It's going to be a hot time in the city."
