PopUps: Sam Smith Dedicates New Video to LGBT Community
British soul singer Sam Smith dedicated his new music video for his single "Lay Me Down" to the LGBT community, with a message of hope that one day same-sex couples around the world will be able to legally marry.
"Dear all, the 'Lay Me Down' music video holds a very dear place in my heart. With this video, myself and Ryan Hope the director have decided to make a statement and showcase something we passionately believe in," Smith wrote on Instagram. "This video shows my dreams that one day gay men and women and transgendered men and women all over the world, like all our straight families and friends, will be able to get married under any roof, in any city, in any town, in any village, in any country.
"I hope you enjoy it. I love you all. x," Smith, 22, added.
In the music video, Sam stands at the alter of a church while singing with friends and family sitting behind him. The clips then cuts to Smith marrying his future husband as a crowd cheers and throws rice.
Though it doesn't look like marriage for Smith is on the horizon anytime soon as he recently split from his boyfriend, model Jonathan Zeizel, after the two met on the set of the music video for "Like I Can" a few months ago.
"Sometimes you just need to lay in bed with a glass of red wine and a football T-shirt and listen to Joni Mitchell. It's been a sad day. Beautiful show, but sad day x," Smith wrote on Instagram at the time of the breakup.
His latest music video on his LGBT supportive message comes after the "Stay With Me" singer made headlines after saying he wasn't trying to be a role model for LGBT people.
He did later clarify his comments, however, and said: "Of course I want to be a spokesman for the gay community. I want to be a spokesman for everyone. What I meant was I don't want to limit to just one community, I want to reach everyone, gay people, lesbians, transsexuals, straight people, Catholics, anyone. I want my music to hit everyone."
