USL Investigating Claim of Anti-Gay Slurs Used Against Robbie Rogers
The United Soccer League (USL) is investigating a claim made by openly gay player Robbie Rogers that a player on the opposing team made repeated anti-gay slurs during a match this weekend. Empire of Soccer reports.
"In the heat of the last fifteen minutes of the game a player from the opposing team called me a "queer" repeatedly," Rogers wrote on Facebook. "To be honest my initial reaction was one of shock. This is my fourth season back in the MLS and I've yet to hear another player use that or any other gay slur during a game."
Rogers, who plays for LA Glaxay, had been out for two months recovering from surgery to his Achilles tendon. The reported incident, which involved a player with the Orange County Blues, occurred during his first game back in play with the Galaxy reserve team LA Galaxy II.
"The USL has begun a full investigation into allegations of homophobic slurs directed at a player during last night's Orange County Blues FC vs. LA Galaxy II game," read a statement released by USL. "The USL has zero tolerance for any discriminatory behavior."
Rogers, who came out in 2013 is the only openly gay player in Major League Soccer.
