NBA Player Anthony Edwards Apologizes for 'Immature' Gay Slur
Minnesota Timberwolves player Anthony Edwards apologized for a video, posted online and since deleted, in which he hurled an anti-LGBTQ+ epithet at a group of men, according to NBC News.
In the video, Edwards, 21, "rolls down a car window and calls a group of shirtless men 'queer' as another person in the car laughs in the background," NBC News detailed. "After a wave of backlash on social media, Edwards said he was 'incredibly sorry.'"
Taking to Twitter on Sept. 11, Edwards sought to mend fences, posting, "What I said was immature, hurtful, and disrespectful, and I'm incredibly sorry."
The shooting guard added: "It's unacceptable for me or anyone to use that language in such a hurtful way, there's no excuse for it, at all. I was raised better than that!"
NBC News noted that Edwards could be subjected to a fine by the NBA, because his comment "most likely violates its social media guidelines." NBC recalled that NBA player Kevin Durant of the Brooklyn Nets was hit with a $50,000 fine last year after posting anti-LGBTQ+ comments online.
Edwards' team has already decried the video, with the Timberwolves issuing a Sept. 12 statement in which the team declared, "We are disappointed in the language and actions Anthony Edwards displayed on social media," ESPN reported.
"The Timberwolves are committed to being an inclusive and welcoming organization for all and apologize for the offense this has caused to so many," the statement added.
