The Most Stylish Queer Celebrities
It goes without saying that the best dressed stars of today likely have a small army of queer people behind them ensuring that their style, hair, skin, jewelry, and makeup are always on point. But what about the actual queer celebrities that have themselves managed to become the best dressed of the year?
Certainly, celebrities like Jacob Elordi, Timothée Chalamet, Bad Bunny, Rihanna, Beyoncé, and — forgive us — Taylor Swift have all helped shape fashion over the last year. But a slew of queer celebs also made their mark, helping to move the ball forward while breaking down barriers and eschewing gender norms. After all, it's worth pointing out that current trends attributed to the open-minded likes of Elordi and Chalamet were all done by queer people first.
With that said, here are EDGE's 10 most stylish queer celebs of 2023.
Jeremy Pope
Jeremy Pope first rose to prominence in 2019, when he scored two Tony nominations in the same year for his first two Broadway shows, "Choir Boy" and "Ain't Too Proud," a musical about The Temptations. This put him in the elite company of only six other actors in history. And while he lost both awards, as anyone who saw him onstage will tell you, it was clear that Pope was destined for stardom. Two years later, he received an Emmy nomination for his work in Ryan Murphy's "Hollywood," and the following year came within a stone's throw of an Oscar nomination for the film "The Inspection." But in 2023, Pope emerged as something else entirely: A style icon. From the GLAAD Awards to the Oscars and the Met Gala, you never know which Jeremy Pope is going to show up, and that's part of what makes his style so alluring.
Jenna Lyons
It is well-established that Jenna Lyons, former executive creative director and president of J.Crew, is a style all-star. Of course, it's her brilliant eye that helped transform J.Crew from a struggling brand with an identity crisis into a bonafide fashion powerhouse back in 2010. But Lyons, who left J.Crew in 2017, rose to prominence again this year as a cast member on the revamped "Real Housewives of New York City," giving viewers a look at not only at her personal style, but also a glimpse into her life — and her drop-dead gorgeous apartment.
Omar Apollo
Apollo shot to fame around this time last year when he scored a coveted Best New Artist nomination at the Grammys following a rather surprising run on the charts with his viral hit "Evergreen." Apollo has always done things his way, even before fame, and while his style has always embraced both the feminine and the masculine, his newfound fame has upped the ante. He's now the face of Loewe, and the campaign was so sexy that even Pedro Pascal took notice.
Matt Bomer
While Jeremy Pope and Omar Apollo turn heads for a bolder reason, Matt Bomer has steadily been one of Hollywood's most dashing, albeit with a knack for recalling the old Hollywood glamor of stars like Rock Hudson. Infinitely classic, Bomer expertly walked many a red carpet this year in looks so refined they could probably cut through glass: Ralph Lauren Purple Label at the Golden Globes, breezy blue Brioni at the GQ Men of the Year party, and plaid Tom Ford at the recent "Maestro" premiere. Don't ever change, Matt.
Jonathan Bailey
Given how often Bailey and Matt Bomer found themselves at events with each other this year (the pair starred together in "Fellow Travelers"), we couldn't pick one without the other. While Bomer's style is more gentlemanly and refined, Bailey's sexy, slightly mussed look gives him more of a bad boy edge, similar to the one wielded by his character in "Bridgerton," the show that first placed Bailey in our collective consciousness. The truth is, Bailey can pull anything off, and that's part of the reason that he's a true versatile style king.
Ariana DeBose
Ever since she swept awards season two years ago for her star-making turn in the "West Side Story" remake, out triple threat Arian DeBose has a been a fixture on red carpets. From hosting gigs at the BAFTAs and back-to-back Tony Awards, DeBose effortless combines fierceness with femininity, edge with elegance. She just never misses, and we suspect her fashion star will only grow brighter.
Alan Cumming
Among all the standout style stories of the year, none were as surprising as the attention Cumming received for his outfits on the reality game show "The Traitors." From People Magazine and The New York Times to Vogue and The Guardian, Cumming's whimsical and oh-so-Scottish looks captivated all that watched. That Cumming largely wears his own clothes on the show makes him an indelible figure of 2023 style.
Jerrod Carmichael
Known for his three HBO comedy specials, NBC's "The Carmichael Show," and for doing a bang-up job as the host of this year's Golden Globe Awards, Carmichael was one of 2023's most buzzed about queer stars, and he certainly dressed the part, not only for his six costume changes during the Globes, but because of the shirtless ensemble he wore when he took home his first Emmy.
Law Roach
Stylist to celebrities like Celine Dion, Zendaya, Kerry Washington, and Ariana Grande, Roach quickly became one of the most sought-after celebrity stylists after Kanye West was photographed walking into a store he owned in Chicago back in 2009. But in 2023, Roach made headlines when he announced that he would be retiring as a stylist in order to live a happier life. While it remains to be seen what Roach will do next, he's still earned his place as one of the most stylish and influential queer people of the year.
Kristen Kish
This Korean-born chef is best known for winning the tenth season of "Top Chef," and since then she's appeared on a string of food-centric television shows, the most recent of which is the 2023 National Geographic series "Restaurants at the End of the World." But in addition to her award-winning knife skills, Kish has become almost as famous for her look: Clean, slightly grungy, and covered in tattoos. No one can pull off a cuffed tee quite like her.
