In February 2019, EDGE embarked on a journey to Austin, Texas, to meet members of the LGBTQ community at Recovery Unplugged, an innovative treatment center for alcohol and substance addiction.

At the time, Kasi had four months clean. It was critical for Kasi to find a program that would not only help him get clean, but also respect and support him through his journey as a transgender man. Recovery Unplugged's unique treatment methodology harnesses the power of music to help clients get and stay sober. It's also attuned to the complexities that many LGBTQ addicts face, including family relationships, civil rights, financial stability and mental health.

A year later, we revisited Kasi to document his success story. Still clean, he's living a happy, sober life, and also giving back to the community that saved his life. Recovery Unplugged's success rate far exceeds the industry average. Kasi exemplifies how music as medicine can help those in recovery find the strength, independence and fortitude to overcome their addiction for good.
