Nationwide Equality Prom to be held in solidarity with LGBT students
After news broke of the cancellation of a Mississippi high school prom following a female student's petition to bring her girlfriend as her date, activist Jen Dugan formed a Facebook event called "Dress You Up in My Love."
The event, also known as the Nationwide Equality Prom, asks Facebook across the country to dress up in their prom finery -- from tuxedos to ball gowns, and everything in between -- on April 2, in a unanimous show of solidarity with Mississippi student Constance McMillan.
"Wearing a tuxedo, suit, gown, or formal dress clothes to class, work, or grocery shopping is out of the ordinary," the event description reads. "So, if anyone asks why you're all dressed up, tell them: A young woman in Mississippi wanted to go to prom with her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo. Instead of being allowed to do this, the administration canceled the prom for everyone."
