Watch: Missouri High School Elects First Male Homecoming Queen
Rock Bridge High School senior Zachary Willmore made history Oct. 26 in Columbia, Missouri, when his high school class crowned him homecoming queen.
Willmore is the school's first male homecoming queen, and his teachers and class are supportive, KOMU 8 News.
"Zachary Willmore is a wonderful student," said Columbia Public Schools spokesperson Michelle Baumstark. "He's engaged in school, active in activities, including cheer, and is not afraid to ask questions and identify challenges he sees around him."
Willmore became queen after posting an Instagram poll on his page asking if he should run for homecoming king or queen. The overwhelming response was queen.
"They thought queen would look prettier on the sash," said Willmore. "I was like, 'You're so correct.' So I chose queen."
Earning his title, Willmore has been instrumental in spurring conversations about inclusivity and acceptance at the high school.
Willmore, who is on the school's cheer team, has more than 1 million followers on TikTok and posted a video of himself with the other students on homecoming court. The video quickly went viral and amplified the proud moment across the internet.
