Here's How Pixar Scrapped Gay 'Luca' Storyline
More is being uncovered about Disney's attitudes toward LGBTQ storylines and the characters, and it all sounds far from being the happiest place on Earth.
IndieWire writes a source close to Pixar recently shared how executives had planned to include a gay character in the film "Luca," Variety reported. However, the character never materialized because writers could not come up with a way to include an LGBTQ character without showing that they were gay.
"We very often came up against the question of, 'How do we do this without giving them a love interest?'" the Pixar employee told Variety. As a result, the ideas were often killed.
"That comes up very often at Pixar," added the employee.
Additionally, LGBTQ details in recent films such as "Soul" and "Inside Out," which took place in New York and San Francisco, almost made it to screen but were ultimately scrapped.
However, change might be on the horizon for Disney after a very public protest from LGBTQ Disney employees over the way the company addressed Florida's "Don't Say Gay" bill and its political contributions.
Pixar recently made headlines for restoring a lesbian kiss in the upcoming film "Lightyear," based off of the character Buzz Lightyear in "Toy Story."
Fans of "Luca," which tells the story of an unbreakable bond between two male sea monsters, were quick to point out the film's gay overtones but the creative team behind the film refused to confirm the existence of romance.
"Some people seem to get mad that I'm not saying yes or no, but I feel like, well, this is a movie about being open to any difference," the film's director Enrico Casarosa about the movie.
