Cher's mother, actress Georgia Holt, has passed away at age 96. The global recording superstar shared news of her mother's passing in a Twitter post, CNN reported.

"Mom is gone," Cher tweeted on Dec. 11, accompanying her brief post with a sad-faced emoji.

The Washington Post confirmed that Cher's mother had passed away. "Cher, who is 76, has long talked about her admiration and respect for her mother and the closeness they shared," the Post noted. "Cher fans have come to [expect regular] updates from the singer on her mother's health, activities and shared humor and wisdom."

"While no further details surrounding her death have been made public, Holt had struggled with health issues in recent months," the CNN report recounted. "In September, Cher shared that her mother had been hospitalized with pneumonia and had been suffering from recurring health issues."

People Magazine recounted that Holt "was born in Arkansas in 1926 as the daughter of 13-year-old Lynda Inez Gulley and 21-year-old Roy Malloy Crouch.

"She eventually landed roles in film and on television after moving to Los Angeles, from 1950's 'Watch the Birdie' to 'I Love Lucy,'" People said, going on to recall that Holt released "her debut album 'Honky Tonk Woman' in 2013, which she recorded in the '80s."

Celebrities and fans alike responded to the news with condolences. Among those expressing their sympathies were "Drag Race" star Trinity the Tuck, out CNN anchor Don Lemon, openly gay TV personality and producer Andy Cohen, recording artist Gloria Estefan, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Cher dipped back into the thread to express her thanks for the outpouring of support.
