Don't Look Up! Out Candidate Alex Walker Explains His Outrageous Ad
"I'm tired of the bulls**t in Washington. It's embarrassing, but more importantly, it costs lives," says Democratic candidate Alex Walker on his website. The out candidate is running to unseat Republican rep Lauren Boebert, who is in her first term. And he is so tired of the bulls**t that he made it literal in an outrageous ad that features poop falling out of the sky onto wary citizens.
The out candidate released the ad in late February, and at the time spoke to reporter Baker Machado for the website Cheddar News. First, Machado asked what prompted him to create the ad, to which Walker responded that he's sick of politics. "I think they are in a horrifying state. And every time I watch the news, it's full of crap. And so I was thinking one day about what I wanted to do to start conveying to people how I'm different and what I want to accomplish in this race, and there seems no better way than by showing it like it was."
But when asked if he thought his ad, which features two minutes of excrement falling on citizens from the sky, was too bold, Walker responded that "bold" was the wrong word. "I think true is the right word. I think when it comes to political ads, or any kind of ads, honestly, we're tired of being preached at, and so when we see an ad that just conveys something which we feel to be true, we like it. And we've really seen that over the past 24 hours; over a quarter-million people have watched this ad, and over 90% of our donations have been from first-time donors. It really seems to be waking people up because it's connecting on this level of truth."
He also distanced himself from the other Democrats in the race, clearly placing himself as a middle-of-the-road candidate.
"I'm a moderate Democrat, and I don't fall for party fealty. I think so much of politics has turned into blind fealty for platforms, which folks might not wholeheartedly agree with. And elections like this are no longer about policy, they're actually about values. And so when you look at a crowded field, who among those folks actually represents you and what you believe in? And I believe in personal freedom, small government that works for its constituents, and politicians who are actually honest."
He went on to point out how Boebert is a rogue candidate who upset the candidate the Republicans had endorsed in a primary before winning the heavily conservative district in the general election. "And let's not forget Lauren Boebert was only elected because she pulled off a primary upset in a primary which had historically low turnout. She unseated a Republican incumbent by fluke. And these are not voters who are committed to learn over by any means, and I have had so many Republicans reach put to me over the last day, saying they are excited to have another alternative."
This week Walker doubled down to reporter Kate Redmond from Public Radio station KSJD about Boebert.
"I think she is repulsive. The reason I launched the way I did is because when you're going up against somebody like Lauren Boebert, who really isn't all that special except for the fact that she's uniquely hateful and bigoted, you can't be quiet. Lauren Boebert is repulsive, she is queerphobic, she's regressive in all the worst ways, but, most importantly, her presence in Congress enables other hateful and potentially smarter bad actors, and then we're in real trouble."
