Bay Windows
Girl watcher
Some photographers accumulate fuzzy photos of sunsets. But when you’re a professional photographer who covers the music and queer scenes in and around Boston, you tend to accumulate photos of drag queens. So when the gallery at The Paradise Lounge approached Kelly Davidson about an exhibit of her rock and roll photography, Davidson had a better idea.
Crossing the border
With New Hampshire joining the ranks of the civil union states this year, same-sex couples can now obtain all of the legal state benefits of marriage in four of the six New England states, either through civil unions in New Hampshire, Vermont and Connecticut or through marriage in Massachusetts. But what happens when you cross state lines?
The sophomore sixth
Tom Dolby is back with The Sixth Form
Distortion
Take some perky pop songs that range in sensibility from surf rock to British Invasion, and play them in an echo chamber that’s six feet underground. That’s the first impression of this muted marvel, which shrouds perfect pop nuggets in layers and layers of fuzz and noise.
Mugs amok in Macao
In Adrift in Macao, opium-addicted but dangerously sexy sing-song girls vamp for the customers in an exotic bar while the owner trades secrets and searches for a mysterious criminal. The Lyric Stage puts on a hidden but hilarious musical comedy!
LGBT gains in N.H. have influenced campaign rhetoric
LGBT advocates made an unprecedented push to the community’s presence known in the early primary states of Iowa and New Hampshire. The years-long effort paid off -- big time -- last week.
Smiley Face
In 2004, Gregg Araki, the indie director who’s a key figure in New Queer Cinema, seemed on the verge of crossover success following the critical accolades heaped on his exquisite character study, Mysterious Skin. What’s he been doing since then? Getting high, apparently.
Guilty
You get cool points for coming out of the Francophone closet, but only geek points for being a fan of Japanese pop. What can I say? I love the simple pleasures of bubblegum pop but get annoyed at the brain-dead lyrics. Since I don’t speak a word of Japanese, J-pop is the answer.
N.H. primary results great news for LGBT America
Former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney’s humiliating defeat at the hands of New Hampshire primary voters Jan. 8 marks the end of his presidential campaign. He’ll still keep running -- he can certainly afford it -- but it’s over.
Some color in your night
Still recovering from partying on New Year’s Eve? DJ Joseph Colbourne has a prescription: "A little hair of the dog don’t hurt!" Colbourne is turning First Night into First Week by throwing a New Year-themed dance party at The Milky Way this weekend.
Two Lives: Gertrude and Alice
How did Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas, a pair of elderly Jewish lesbians, survive the Nazi occupation of France? That’s the opening question of this fascinating book that begins as a simple historical narrative, and expands into an exploration of Stein’s work and her relationship with Toklas.
’I’m embarrassed at what I did’
It’s not often we receive letters with the subject heading "Apology To Gay Community." More often than not we just get complaints about typos or creepy missives from cranks who just generally hate the gays. And these days, it seems the only time people apologize is just before they head off to rehab, jail or are otherwise forced into contrition by Oprah or Jay Leno. So you can imagine our surprise when we saw that subject heading in our inbox on Dec. 22 and opened an email signed by one Stephen Dunne (see below), the man more commonly known as "the bar exam flunker."
Mine
After a year of skimming every novel from this publisher, I’ve come to suspect that there are a lot of nervous lesbians in the world. Who else would buy a timid romance like this?
The Rev. Martin McLee: Welcoming all to the church
Last June, Union United Methodist Church threw open its doors to host the annual Boston Pride Interfaith Service, a pre-parade tradition that goes back 30 years. It marked the first time a historically black church hosted the event.

Think the LGBT community’s work on Beacon Hill is over now that the marriage amendment is dead? Think again.
Civil unions come to New Hampshire
CONCORD, N.H. - Bundled against the freezing temperatures in ski hats, snow boots, woolen overcoats and earmuffs, about three dozen same-sex couples said "I do" as Granite Staters - both gay and straight - celebrated the implementation of the state’s civil union law in front of the New Hampshire State House minutes after the start of the New Year.
In The Name of the Father
Brisk is the word for this undemanding but entertaining mystery/police procedural that continues the story of Dallas homicide detectives Tori Hunter and Samantha Kennedy, who were introduced in Hunter’s Way
MassEquality Campaign Director Marc Solomon: Regrouping after a devastating loss
After all of the victory rallies and gala celebrations that followed the June 14 defeat of the marriage amendment, it’s hard to remember how bleak things looked at the beginning of 2007.
Courage under fire
The 11 legislators who had an 11th hour change of heart on the anti-gay marriage amendment and thus secured its defeat on June 14 have been picketed, pilloried and crank-called by angry opponents of marriage equality.
The wedding party
2007 was the year we finally won the marriage battles. More people than can be mentioned made it happen. But Bay Windows honors the following for making a crucial difference
