Long Island Pride Postponed, but Not Canceled

Monday April 20, 2020

Long Island Pride's 30th Anniversary events, originally scheduled for Sunday, June 14, at Jones Beach, has been postponed, according to the organization's president and CEO, David Kilmnick, Ph.D.

However, Dr. Klimnick stressed, postponed does not mean canceled.

In a statement, Klimnick said that Long island Pride "will continue to work with New York State and health authorities to reschedule the in-person Pride celebration when it is safe to do so."

The statement said that the event had to be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. COVID-19 is a highly communicable virus, and the best way to avoid spreading it is to avoid crowds and practice social distancing and isolation.

But that does not mean the colors of the rainbow flag aren't as bright as ever.

"This year's Long Island Pride march and celebration, when it happens, will mark a milestone — our 30th Anniversary," Dr. Klimnick said in the statement. "We had to fight and go to court just to have the right to march on Long Island streets 30 years ago. We won that right to march in a federal courtroom in 1991 and we will prevail again this year.

"Pride is the vaccine of hope for so many young people and others who are not out," Klimnick continued. "They see the beauty and power of tens of thousands of Long Islanders smiling and joining together as one. Simply put, Pride saves lives and it must continue with whatever modifications need to be made.

"We also believe that being at home does not mean we cannot be OUT. A virtual Long Island Pride celebration and details will be announced soon and we are looking for volunteers to help. And be on the lookout for announcements of weekly social gatherings, programs and live stream from the LGBT Network making sure we stay connected."

The statement ended on an upbeat note:

"Our community has always been resilient and strong and has always persevered and I have no doubt that this incredible strength will carry us through together as a family. Thank you for all your support and love!"
