Pride in the Park
It was an early summer celebration full of friends, families and pride when hundreds gathered at Hagen Park in Wilton Manors for Pridefest's 2007 "Pride Picnic." It's the event's 24th anniversary. Organizers say the event is their way of saying thank you to the volunteers who help out year round with Pride of South Florida, Pride of Fort Lauderdale and Women in Network. According to Keith Howard, Pride of Greater Fort Lauderdale Historian, another reason for the get together is to broaden community awareness and unity.
South Florida residents said they attended the picnic for one main reason: to show support and pride in the community. Many couples brought their children - there were at least two dozen youngsters in attendance at the picnic.
Crystal and Becky brought their young son. They live out of state and say there are no events like this where they now reside. They want little Dylan to see that he's not the only boy with two moms. "I feel isolated in Virginia. Here there is a real sense of community and family. I'm so happy to see all of these women and their children," said Crystal.
Others came to the event with shallower motives. Francesca Casado and her friends say they were there because they wanted to meet other lesbians. They also said that because of the diverse crowd, it's a great place to network.
For parents and non-parents alike, the festival was the perfect place to make new friends. Strangers started on line for food and wine - and while eating at the covered tables.
While everyone in attendance was having a great time, this was by no means a huge pride event. There was a lot of excitement and anticipation looking forward to the upcoming Stonewall Street Festival and Parade. Thousands are expected to attend. This year, the fun kicks off with a Comic Concert at the War Memorial on Saturday, June 23rd. It's called "3 Jokers, A FULL HOUSE and Nothing Straight." The Headliners are Ant (From Last Comic Standing), Michele Balan and Jessica Kirson. EDGE will be there - hope you will too.
