Queer Comedy Icon Margaret Cho Wants a Trans Disney Princess
Is Disney ready for a trans princess? Queer comedy icon Margaret Cho seems to think so.
Speaking to the Times of India, Cho stressed the "importance to recognize" queer representation in the media and how Disney could go further as an ally with a trans princess.
"We are everywhere in society, so this is just another example of that, where I think we belong," said Cho, who identifies as bisexual. "I would love to see [them] everywhere. I would love to see trans characters. I would love to see different types of people in the roles of like Disney Princess, Disney Prince."
Cho plays supporting character Mrs. Chen, a school counsellor, in the new Disney+ film, "Prom Pact." Although she recognizes that Disney is indeed embracing LGBTQ+ characters, she is calling for more to humanize these very real LGBTQ+ stories.
"Prom Pact" includes lots of queer representation, with same-sex teenagers asking each other to the prom, and clips of LGBTQ+ couples dancing together in the trailer.
As Disney gears up for a battle with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis over its operational independence in the "Don't Say Gay" state, LGBTQ+ is more important now than ever in the state.
"I think this would be really important and it's a move towards the future," she said. "It's a move towards who we are. I think it's really admirable and really exciting."
