Zombieland: Double Tap
It's hard to believe that ten years flew by and the first "Zombieland" film was released in 2009. It's also hard to fathom that the world needed a sequel to that hit comedy about a makeshift family on the run from killer zombies. While definitely entertaining enough, "Zombieland: Double Tap" goes through the motions and basically rehashes iconic scenes from the 2009 film.
Ten years have gone by and Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), Little Rock (Abigail Breslin), and Wichita (Emma Stone) have moved into the deserted White House. This scenario should've given way to clever and snarky political comedic situations, but the filmmakers decide to squash this idea. Instead, "Zombieland: Double Tap" becomes a typical on-the-road movie.
Little Rock, the burgeoning young woman, feels trapped and goes on the run to a place called "Babylon." Her family goes after her and along the way, discovers that the zombies have become faster and harder to kill. They also run into doppelgangers of themselves and in one of "Double Tap's" best moments, actor Luke Wilson mimics the zany antics of Woody Harrelson to perfection.
These funny scenes are fleeting and the film relies on quick one-liners that fall flat. And Abigail Breslin's character inexplicably disappears for most of this sequel. However, new characters played by Rosario Dawson and Zoey Deutsh breathe a little life into "Zombieland 2".
Hints of a "Zombieland" trilogy arrive at the end of the film's credits and are also referenced in some of the numerous special features on the Blu-ray. Sony Pictures packs a punch with 6 behind-the-scenes featurettes, an audio commentary, and deleted scenes. It's obvious from the special features that the actors and crew had a blast making the sequel, even if the end result comes across as slightly above average.
