Watch: Singer Sam Smith Opens Up About Pronoun Usage

Tuesday March 3, 2020

Sam Smith is opening up about being misgendered since coming out as non-binary last September, saying that most cases are a mistake.

The "To Die For" crooner's comments came when they spoke with the Australian news program "The Project" last week, Billboard reports. Smith acknowledged that fans sometimes slip up when using pronouns (Smith uses they/them), but as long as they correct themselves, it's OK.

Host Carrie Bickmore said that was "tripping up" when it came to Smith's correct pronoun usage.

Smith admitted they mess up pronoun usage too.

"Of course I do, I'm a human being," they said. "I've been called 'he' and 'him' since the day I was born, 27 years of my life, so I can understand!"

Smith added that even their mother has a hiccup now and then and she gets upset with herself for the error.

"All I can say is, when people use my pronouns correctly, it's a wonderful feeling. I feel safe, and I feel happy, and I feel completely seen," they said.

Smith's third album "To Die For" is out on May 1.
