Queerily Blonde? Did Original 'Legally Blonde' Have Elle Woods in a Relationship with Rival Vivian?

"Legally Blonde" celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. To mark the occasion, the New York Times brought together many of the film's principals — both in front of and behind the camera — to talk about the film, which spawned two sequels and a Broadway musical.

Decider reports: "While Elle and Vivian (Selma Blair) were sworn enemies for much of the film, the writers had a surprise ending in store for the women, they revealed. One of the possible endings toLegally Blondeturned the rivalry into a romance."

In the Times discussion, Jessica Cauffiel — who played Margot in the film — dropped a bombshell (of sorts): "The first ending was Elle and Vivian (Selma Blair) in Hawaii in beach chairs, drinking margaritas and holding hands. The insinuation was either they were best friends or they had gotten together romantically."

Actor Alanna Ubach — who plays Serena, one of Elle's best friends in the film — concurred with Cauffiel about the ending, the Times added; but the screenwriters say they never wrote such an ending.

The film's ending features Elle giving a graduation speech two years after the film's main action. But this wasn't arrived at easily. One ending that was tested with audiences had Elle kissing her boyfriend Emmett (Luke Wilson); but screenwriter Kirsten Smith told the Times that "every time people didn't want to end it with a kiss. They thought it wasn't a story about [Elle] getting a boyfriend, which was really cool to have people say that."

Whether or not "Legally Blonde" was originally to end with a queer moment is inconclusive, but Twitter went wild with speculation about it with thoughts of where it could lead in a sequel:
