Finding an LGBTQ+-friendly city can sometimes be a challenge because, as members of the LGBTQ+ community, we need to ensure that we navigate our travels with awareness and preparation. Not only does Saratoga Springs embrace diversity, but it celebrates it!
I found a lot of Pride in this small town, and Saratoga Springs should become a new favorite destination for the LGBTQ+ community.

"Our vibrant community brings together music, art, history, horses, and people of diverse backgrounds and identities. Each year, we proudly celebrate the LGBTQ+ community during Pride Month with city-wide events like the Saratoga Pride Festival. We also collaborate with local organizations year-round to promote inclusivity and unity."
Finding a place to stay can easily be the most expensive part of a trip; hotels are not cheap, but location is everything. Saratoga Arms is a hotel conveniently located in the heart of downtown on Broadway. Amy Smith, who co-owns the property with her mother Kathleen, is a proud member of the Saratoga Springs LGBTQ+ community, and the hotel is a welcome retreat for all.
This beautifully restored, award-winning Second Empire brick hotel was built in 1870 by Loren Putnam, a grandson of Gideon Putnam. It is run by the lovely Kathleen, who purchased the buildings in 1997 along with her husband, Noel. They oversaw extensive (and some unexpected) renovations. Saratoga Arms reopened as a luxury sixteen-room inn in February of 1999, and now has 31 elegant rooms, each of which is period-inspired with a relaxing ambiance and includes all the comforts you need for your stay. The free snack bar across from the front desk is plentiful and amazing. There is a basement fitness center and off-street parking. Breakfast is a sumptuous farm-to-table experience. The staff is gracious and always ready to help, ensuring a stress-free stay. A must-do is to idle on the large front porch anytime during your stay.
Now it's time to plan your exciting to-do list. This charming city offers many things to explore, from beautiful parks and amazing food to grand architecture and natural springs. Whether you're a history buff, a foodie, or a nature lover, Saratoga Springs has something to pique your interest and keep you entertained throughout your visit.
Get ready for an exhilarating experience at the Saratoga Race Course! Since 1863, this iconic venue has been a must-see hotspot for visitors, and the 2024 season was to be no different. With Opening Day this past July 11, and a season filled with five days of racing each week, this event surely inspired thrill seekers.
Even if you're not there to see the races, you'll want to explore the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. Your tour will take you on an incredible journey through the sport's history, including some incredible fine art, trophies, and historical artifacts. The museum's new film, "What It Takes: Journey to the Hall of Fame," is a 16-minute immersive experience that brings viewers on an amazing journey through the sport and examines the rare honor of earning a coveted spot in the Hall of Fame.
If you still have a need for speed, then you will enjoy the Saratoga Automobile Museum in the former Saratoga bottling plant built in 1934. The museum displays about 30 vehicles and features both permanent and rotating exhibits. They host lawn events all summer long. The day I visited, it was "Cadillac" day.
Relax and rejuvenate at the Roosevelt Baths & Spa in Saratoga Spa State Park. Established in 1935, the Roosevelt Baths & Spa opened thanks to President Franklin Roosevelt's visionary act to preserve the Saratoga Springs area. Enjoy a private soak in Saratoga's naturally effervescent water; before or after, enjoy other treatments, including facials, body polishes, and mud wraps. Many believe there are healing powers in the water; you will have to decide that for yourself.
The best part about traveling is experiencing new and local cuisine. Downtown boasts many recommendable spots for all your meals. Sweet Mimi's Cafe & Bakery is the place for breakfast lovers. This charming neighborhood cafe offers a fabulous breakfast and is owned by Jeannette Liebers. You must try her Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, as seen on "Beat Bobby Flay." Breakfast is the day's most important meal, so you should start your morning by dining at Sweet Mimi's.
Saratoga Spa State Park, a National Historic Landmark, is full of things to explore and the perfect place to have a picnic, so let Putnam Market make your lunch. They do all of their cooking and baking in-house. I was told I must try the Putnam sandwich — smoked turkey, brie, and honey mustard — and I am glad I did; it was delicious. Make sure you get the carrot cake cupcakes — one of the best I have ever tasted.
The Saratoga Springs food scene is a culinary treat. The city boasts many restaurants within easy walking distance (especially if you stay on Broadway), like Forno Bistro, Harvey's Restaurant and Bar, and Chianti Ristorante. Foodies near and far will enjoy the many cuisine choices that are offered.
History buffs will love Saratoga National Historical Park. Visitors can explore the historic battlefield, America's turning point, or The Philip Schuyler House — yes, that Philip Schuyler, from the musical "Hamilton." A few miles down the road, in Gansevoort, you can visit the Grant Cottage, the final home of Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States.
In 2023, Time Out Magazine named Saratoga Springs one of the best LGBTQ+-friendly small towns in the United States. Pay a visit to this enchanting community, and you'll see why.
