Bonauto, Coakley included in Boston Magazine’s "Most Powerful Women" list
Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) Civil Rights Project Director Mary Bonauto and Massachusetts District Attorney Martha Coakley were named on Boston Magazine's "50 Most Powerful Women in Boston."
The alphabetical list, posted online Jan. 25, includes a demonstration of each woman's power. Bonauto's "power demo" reads, "Masterminding the landmark Goodridge v. Department of Public Health lawsuit that led to legal same-sex marriage."
Coakley's reads, "Keeping auto insurance low; getting one of the first big settlements from Goldman Sachs; regulating utility costs under Cape Wind. (Okay, so she's a really bad campaigner.)"
While no mention of Coakley's challenge of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) -- Commonwealth of Massachusetts v. Health and Human Services -- is made, both women played key roles in a Boston District Judge's decision to rule DOMA unconstitutional.
Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea Cabral is also included on the "Top 50" list, as is State Senator Sonia Chang-Diaz.
