A 56-year-old transgender woman was stabbed while at a house in Northeast D.C.'s Kingman Park neighborhood at around 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, marking the city's 12th assault against a transgender woman where a knife or gun was used since July.

The stabbing occurred in the 1500 block of Gales Street NE. According to the police incident report, the transgender woman was in the basement of the house when she got into a ''heated'' argument with a man. After the woman called him a ''bitch,'' the man stabbed her in the back with a knife.

After being stabbed, the woman left the house and walked to a nearby apartment complex in the 1500 block of Benning Road NE. Police were called to the scene and report that when they arrived the victim was conscious and breathing, though lying on the ground, bleeding from a stab wound to her lower back. She was transported to Washington Hospital Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to an email from Capt. Edward Delgado of the Metropolitan Police Department's Special Liaison Division, which includes the Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit (GLLU), sent to local transgender activist Earline Budd, GLLU officers are assisting in the investigation.

An MPD spokeswoman said the case is still under investigation, with no further information available.
