Elton John Celebrates 29 Years of Sobriety
"29 years ago today, I was a broken man."
Elton John took to Instagram today to celebrate his 29th alcohol-free year, posting a picture of his AA sobriety token. The heartfelt caption thanked the people in his life who helped him along the way. To them, "I am eternally grateful," he wrote.
The singer recently spoke to Variety about his sobriety, saying "I am a survivor. I've survived a lot of things. Life is full of pitfalls, even when you're sober. I can deal with them now because I don't have to run away and hide."
He elaborated on how his life has been better sans-alcohol, saying: "I have a confrontation problem which I don't have anymore because I learned if you don't communicate and you don't talk about things then you're never going to find a solution."
"What I couldn't do when I was an addict was communicate, except when I was on cocaine I thought I could but I talked rubbish," John said.
Congrats to Sir Elton for his 29 sober years, and here's to many more great ones ahead of him and his family. Let's take a second to revisit the first album released during his sobriety journey, 1992's "The One." The 2x platinum album was his biggest hit since 1975.
