Dr. Anthony Fauci on Hookups: Proceed At Your Own Risk

Friday April 17, 2020

As social distancing restrictions are set to ease in the near future, there is no doubt that many that use dating apps such a Grindr, Scruff or Tinder wonder when they can follow through on a 'woof' or swipe.

The question came up in an interview with Dr. Anthony Fauci on Snapchat's Good Luck America.

"During the interview, host Peter Hamby asked the 79-year-old: 'If you're swiping on a dating app like Tinder or Bumble or Grindr and you match with someone and you're like: 'Maybe it's fine if this one stranger comes over.' What do you say to that person?'" reports The Independent

"You know, that's tough. Because it's what's called relative risk," Fauci answered.. "If you really feel that you don't want to have any part of this virus, will you maintain six feet away, wear a mask, do all the things that we talk about in the guidelines? You know, everybody has their own tolerance for risks. And it depends on the level of the interaction that you want to have.

"If you're looking for friends, sit in a room and put a mask on and, you know, chat a bit. If you want to go a bit more intimate, then that's your choice regarding a risk."

"The risk of contracting the novel coronavirus through sexual contact is pretty high, at least according to pamphlets distributed by the New York and Oregon departments of health, which go into great detail over how to protect yourself from contracting COVID-19 during a romantic encounter," writes The Daily Wire.

Adding to the risk are those individuals who are asymptomatic and may spread the virus unwittingly, citing that around 40% of people who contract the virus show no symptoms. "Hooking up with someone who appears to be feeling well is no guarantee that you're hooking up with someone who isn't a carrier for the virus," adds the Daily Wire.

"What we're seeing," Dr. Fauci said, "which becomes really problematic, is that there's a considerable amount of transmission from an asymptomatic person."
