Watch: Gay Student Heckled While Sharing Her Bullying Story
Cameras captured the moment a high school student in Franklin, Massachusetts, when a gay student was speaking about being bullied during a school committee meeting and she was heckled by an audience member, reported NY Daily News.
Mackenzie Atwood is a senior at Franklin High School. While speaking about how all students should be protected regardless of their gender, gender identity, sexuality, and race, she was interrupted by a parent.
"This woman stood up and said that this was the type of indoctrination that is being taught in schools," Atwood told CBS Boston. She responded to the woman by saying, "I am gay ... Call me what you want about that, I'm being personally attacked in school about that."
Atwood was visibly upset in the video as the parent began yelling in the background and can be heard saying, "This has to stop. This is indoctrination."
The exchange led the school committee chair, Anne Bergen, to intervene and ask the parent to stand down or be escorted out.
"This meeting will be conducted respectfully, and there will be no shouting out from the crowd," Bergen said. "That is not how we ever, ever, conduct meetings in this building."
Watch the moment below, but be warned that it is not an easy moment to watch.
