Gus Kenworthy Proud to Be Gay at Beijing Olympic Games
Gus Kenworthy may be competing for Team Great Britain in this year's Winter Olympic Games, but he is still stealing hearts on both sides of the pond.
In an interview with NBC, the British American freestyle skier opened up about how much it meant for him to be competing in his last Olympic Games as an out athlete.
He shares that when he competed at the Sochi Olympics in 2014, he was afraid that people would find out he was gay. Now he is proudly a part of the Olympics' LGBTQ representation at the Beijing Games.
"Honestly, it means the world to me to get to compete here as an out proud gay man and to know that there are other out LGBTQ athletes that are here competing," Kenworthy says. "I think for anybody that wants to come out but is struggling, I'd just encourage them to try and live their truth or speak their truth, even if it's just to one person."
Kenworthy is already thinking about his post-athlete career, which will include a few acting roles and maybe adopting more than a few dogs, according to him.
Beyond that, the sky is the limit for the skier because he says he is finally comfortable in his own skin.
"It's such a liberating experience to tell someone," he added about coming out.
