A Las Vegas man who reportedly told police he is "incredibly homophobic" is accused of stabbing a man he believed was gay because he "was going to get retaliation and kill a homosexual," authorities said according to the New York Daily News.

"Dontay Gray, who is on parole from California, is charged with attempted murder, battery, robbery and committing a hate crime. The 32-year-old suspect followed a man on Saturday night to a darkened area in downtown Las Vegas with the intent to stab and kill him, police said. After he was arrested, authorities said that he provided a 'full confession' to the stabbing, in which he used anti-LGBTQ slurs to describe the victim, reported the Daily News.

Gray admitted to purchasing a knife from a smoke shop an hour before the attack and was planning on killing two people he encountered in the 1000 block of Fremont Street, according to the arrest report.

Police said two people were walking on Fremont Street at 8 p.m. when they noticed Gray following them, leaving the pair "incredibly creeped out," reported the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The two men separated when one returned to a convenience store to purchase additional items. After leaving the store a second time, the victim — whose name was redacted in the report — noticed Gray following him as he was walking home, police said.

The man asked Gray, "Can I help you?" to which Gray responded by removing his hands from his hoodie and stabbing the man before walking away, police said.

Gray said he was trying to lure the man into an alley to stab him because he knew there were cameras at the intersection, according to the report.
