Dyke March Chicago Moves to Pilsen

This year’s annual Dyke March is set for Pilsen on Saturday, a first in the March’s 12 year history. With the only two "official" gay neighborhoods in Chicago being on the North side, a break from the traditional Andersonville is not without controversy.

It’s the premiere LGBT tasting event in the country, benefitting the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center of New York. This year the pier event celebrated both the 25th anniversary of the Center and the 25th Garden Party with more than 30 restaurants, an open bar and star-powered entertainment including the return of host Kate Clinton. Guests sampled dishes from the city’s best restaurants, visited booths from community organizations and enjoyed entertainment, while politicians greeted-and everyone enjoyed the open bars. There’s just something wrong about going to see Joan Rivers at the Flatiron cabaret space the Cutting Room, where she performs just about every Wednesday night she’s in town. It’s not that there’s anything shameful about attending, nor is it her brand of shocking and offensive comedy. It’s that you get to see a comedy legend and a gay icon in a room with only about 100 people. Shouldn’t she be playing Carnegie Hall or something?

Over eight hours of entertainment on the main stage headlined by Tiffany, numerous vendors and thousands of participants made for a great day. There is plenty to celebrate this pride season - most notably the great social upheaval that the California Supreme Court has initiated that sanctions gay marriage in that state. Yet will the good feelings that this act has brought be dashed next November if a conservative-sponsored ballot initiative repealing gay marriage passes?
