NH Hotel Group Responds to Spain's Coronavirus Crisis

Wednesday April 22, 2020

Since the onset of the COVID-19 health crisis, NH Hotel Group has been making its various resources available to Spanish authorities and nonprofit organizations.

This month, the NH Collection Madrid Eurobuilding hotel opened its doors to renowned Spanish Chef Jos Andrs and his NGO, World Central Kitchen (WCK), in collaboration with the #ChefsForSpain initiative and the gastronomic referral agency of Spain, Mateo & Co. to help feed people with limited resources who now find themselves even more vulnerable as a result of this crisis.

Chef Pepa Muoz, from nearby El Qenco de Pepa Restaurant, is coordinating the kitchen of the NH Collection Madrid Eurobuilding hotel, alongside a large group of WCK volunteers. Within the hotel's facilities, they are able to make thousands of healthy, daily food rations with high quality ingredients that cover the needs of both adults & children, while also taking into account their different nutritional and/or religious requirements.

The hotel recently expanded production to its second kitchen which will double this capacity to serve from 1,000 meals per day to 2,000 per day.

Additionally, NH Hotel Group is donating all of the food from hotels it has been forced to close due to government restrictions, to charitable entities such as Madrid's REMAR foundation.

The Food Bank of Madrid, which serves more than 500 charitable entities throughout the Community of Madrid, assures the food and meals get distributed to more than 150,000 beneficiaries, including food distribution centers, soup kitchens, the elderly, and families at high risk of social exclusion.

Up North, the NH Collection A Corua Finisterre has also joined the fight to work with WCK. They'll start by making 500 meals a day for their most vulnerable residents, with a goal to quickly reach 1,000 meals per day.

Founded in 2010 with a mission to feed hungry people during a disaster, World Central Kitchen responded to the threat of COVID-19 in more than 20 cities around the world. Since beginning operations in Andrs' home country of Spain on March 27th, WCK's Relief Team in Spain has created 14 kitchens in 10 cities, serving 20,000 meals per day across the region.

The NH Parla in Madrid, and the NH Irua Park located in Pamplona, have also been medicalized, in agreement with health authorities, to help alleviate pressure on the local healthcare system. These properties now welcome healthcare personnel and patients affected by Coronavirus who require isolation without the need to stay in a hospital.

NH Hotel Group will continue its efforts to support local communities, healthcare workers, and families in need by donating food, material resources and accommodations wherever possible until this crisis subsides. Until then, NH properties around the globe remain illuminated with their "Hotels with Heart" message of unity, solidarity and encouragement.

NH Hotel Group is scheduled to open its first hotel in North America, the NH Collection New York Madison Avenue, in New York City, in September.
